When we set out to make Return to Sender in 2022, we wanted to create something that truly personified Nick’s character, mindset, and experiences. We didn’t want to shy away from death, destruction, or the overarching resonance of what stands between our freedoms and those who protect them.
We decided to do a print for multiple reasons. As Nick’s story has been told on podcasts, written in books, and has been the topic of multiple new articles, it felt more impactful to tell his story without delay and without words.

A word From Our Artist
Having been to many art museums, studied art in college, and scratched my head while looking sideways at many historic pieces, it was important for me to convey Nick’s story without confusion. Return to Sender should be read from left to right. The left side is not only about experiences from Nick’s time in Afghanistan, but also a representation of emotion and the efforts of many great Americans whose actions in time of crisis and rehabilitation, saved his life, and helped him along on his road to recovery. In the middle of the page and working to the right, Nick is in shadow. His back to the past as he looks out onto the landscape of the Middle East in Machine form, ready to finish what he started, or as he would say “getting back to work,” signifying his Return to Sender.
The Process
Return to Sender was digitally hand-drawn over four months in 2022. Beginning with a sketch and moving onto stylist and mouse, over 120 hours were spent drawing in every square inch of our print. Pay close attention to the highlights, shadows, details and subtleties throughout Return to Sender.
